Maui-Water, Whales, & Walking in nature

Whales: This series begins with a baby whale breaching followed by an adult whale breaching, and then a female being pursued by four males. The last four are the best! --a  set of four shots of a complete breach cycle.  These pictures were taken on two different days; one being a sunny day and the other day having a very brownish/gray sky.

Haleakala mountain: These pictures were taken at the 9,500 feet point near the top of the mountain. These photos were taken looking into the mountain's crater. The orange and green mounds are called cones. The color reflects the iron (green) and copper (orange).  The crater is about the size of Manhattan.  It takes hours to walk down to the crater's floor.

Beach scenes: A dear friend requested beach pictures. Taken at various beaches

Blowhole: Walk down to the bottom of the hill and you will be standing on a lava shelf. There is a hole in the shelf. When the waves hit the underside of this shelf  water goes up into the hole. The water can shoot up to 90 feet high.   People are warned not to get too close because they can be (and have been!) pulled into the hole when the water comes back down!

3 Scenery pictures along the coast -these are between Blowhole and the Kapaula hike trail

Kapalua hike along a lava outcropping:  The lava on this outcropping is slowly breaking down. There are areas of black lava and areas that are becoming dirt as is evidenced by the vegetation that is growing here.  I specifically included shots of lava-some look like bubbles and others look like stands or tire tracks.

This set of pictures were taken over two or three days and at various times of the day. The mid morning shots are more crisp and the colors are more vivid and bright. Those pictures taken late in the day have a warmth and a softer look.  Those shots taken closer to sunset have an even warmer tone. The sun casts a very soft yellow light onto the area.  Notice the beautiful skies. I tried to put similar shots taken at different times of the day to follow one another.
